What is moss?

Moss is a very simple type of plant that lacks conventional roots, stems and leaves, and because of this its growth is limited to moist locations like well-shaded roofs.

Is moss on roofs a problem?

In a word, yes. Moss on your roof traps moisture and keeps the roof 'wet' longer. This tends to exacerbate the wear and tear on your roof, reducing its effective life. That in turn leads to the dreaded roof leak. All roofing materials eg slate tiles, cement tiles or asbestos can be affected by moss.

Even the thinnest layer of moss is a problem. That's because it acts like a sponge trapping water, which increases the weight on the roof.

In the UK, freezing conditions are quite common. Moss can cause faster frost damage and cracking and can also penetrate and separate the roof materials, causing the roof shingles to wear out faster. What is more, it gives your roof a dull and dirty appearance which will inevitably reduce the value of your home.

So what can be done?
